i'm extremely interested in aitsf and zero escape, specifically 999! i heavily project onto clover, and i'm passionate about her character. i refuse to acknowledge her existence in vlr / vlr at all, and i've written a couple of rambles here! it contains a bunch of spoilers for ze virtues last reward.

to start with, clover is specified to be highly dependant on her older brother, snake. she loves him unconditionally and expresses this through words and actions. they have been called 'inseperable', and are noted as having amongst the strongest psychic links to one another. clover's mental health takes a rapid decline when snake goes missing, and it's made abundantly clear that her sanity snaps when she believes snake to be dead. clover is willing to murder and die for snake, and does so in bad ends.onto virtues last reward. clover was rated the first most popular character from 999 in japan, and the second most popular character in america. because of this, kotaro uchikoshi shoehorned her into virtues last reward with no thought to her actual character or personality. instead of a smart, talented, multi-layered and complex character, clover was turned into a ditzy, naive character intended to be sexualised - a character who is supposed to be apart of secret service agency, but cannot even read the word 'pantry' or connect food to it.clover states that the only time she's ever been happy is when she's with her brother. snake and clover ran away together, they live together, they work together, and when they're not physically in contact, they're speaking through the morphogenetic field. because of this, we can conclude that clover and snake are very rarely ever apart. why, then, does clover never mention her brother in vlr? why is she not shown to worry for his safety?why does she display no concern when she states that she can't get ahold of him through their psychic link? why is she unbothered upon realising that snake is most likely dead, and has most likely spent the past 45 years alone, searching for her?one could argue that the change in personality could be due to how many years have passed. however, it's stated that only one year has passed between 999 and vlr. one year spent recovering with her brother who she once thought dead, inseparable and at each others sides nearly 24/7. this kind of change in personality and dependency does not change within a year, especially not when this is the first time that clover has ever been completely without her brother.
moving onto the timeline. clover has said to have achieved the following:- spent time being frustrated with bodyguards following herself and her brother around that they ran away and found an apartment to live in together.
- rejected the offer to join the sios.
- joined the sios.
- trained for a few months at most.
- was sent on a solo mission to take down an elite terrorist organisation.all of this, if going by the timeline, would have happened in a year, at most, and most likely under a year. in virtue's last reward, clover is written as so dense that she cannot read basic english, but on the flipside has an extensive vocabulary and understanding of complex scientific theories and is a secret agent in charge of protecting the state, and government secrets.sexual assault warning ahead.
moreover, the promotional game for virtues last reward was, essentially, a game intended to sexually assault her.lastly, clover was forced into vlr in order to fulfil uchikoshi's obsession with her, and the 'fan favourite returning character' trope. her character was not treated with respect, she was taken wildly out of character because certain writers do not understand the nuances of writing a complex character like clover. i reject her existence within vlr, and if i'm forced to acknowledge it, then i have my own theory, because the canon does not spark joy within me.theory!
vlr clover is a clone. clonever, if you will she was created after the real clover rejected the offer to join the sios. this is why she's so different, to the point that she's another character entirely. this is why alice trusts her so implicitly, and is so shocked by her (potential) betrayal.alternatively.
if clover was written well, the following could have happened. clover would be reserved, distant, suspicious, and eager to betray to leave. she'd trust alice, but not unconditionally, and she'd betray her in order to gain bp points. she'd blame alice, in a way, as she was the one who badgered her into joining the sios. she was in the sios, who should have been protecting her and her brother, and they let her get kidnapped.during alice's coma, she'd realise that it's not alice's fault and begin to open and warm back up to her. clover's plot twist would be people finding out that she's an esper and has the ability to access the morphogenetic field.sigma would question why she hasn't used it to contact anyone from the outside, and clover would snap; crying, and yelling. "because I can't! because... because i've been trying to contact my brother ever since i woke up, and he hasn't answered anything!"in conclusion, thanks uchikoshi for nothing.
